System Administration

Most multi-user client/server based software systems require some level of "system administration".   This means that certain tasks are delegated to one user or at most a very few users who communicate with each other so that their actions do not conflict.   In the case of where Captools/net is operated as a single user system, Captools/net system administration tasks will be handled by the sole user.  In the case of where Captools/net is operated as a single site system with only a small number of users, the system administration tasks can be handled by one of the end users.

For larger, Enterprise level installations, it is a good idea to formally assign Captools/net system administration tasks to an information technology (IT) department employee, since the person with these responsibilities will need to have access to the Captools/net server computers.  These responsibilities may or may not also include the responsibilities described in the topic Data Administration later in this chapter.

After installation and data conversion (described in the chapter Installation), Captools/net system administration responsibilities fall into the categories of User Administration, Data Administration and Database Backups.   Because the system administrator will need to have the highest level access rights to the server computer and the Captools/net server applications, this person needs to be competent and trustworthy.
