Windows 7 (and Vista) Install hints

Previous topic Next topic

1.) If the CTNetCDMenu.exe fails to launch then first download the CTRemoteHost.exe, to get remoted in to Captools Co. for support. Then download the CTNetSetup.exe from the 'Vista' folder under the 'WU' folder on our website (www.captools.com/ctnet/WU/Vista/CTNetSetup.exe).

2.) Once you launch the CTNetSetUp.exe program try to use the 'Auto Install' first. Use the 'Manual Install' if the auto install fails and\or you have to re-do some of the configuration stuff. Also, when you launch the CTNetSetUp.exe program if you get a Windows warning message from 'Program Compatibility Assistant' with the message 'This program might not have installed correctly' then choose the second option on that dialog that says 'This Program Installed Correctly'. Doing so will close that warning message and lets you continue with the CTNetSetUp.exe program.

3.) Change the Windows Performance settings to speed up the remote connection by going into

a.) Windows 'Control Panel | System (or System and Security) | Advanced system Settings (on the left pane)

b.) In the 'Performance' group click the 'Settings' button

c.) Choose the third radio button 'Adjust for best performance' and click Ok all the way through

d.) Wait for a few seconds and then go to UAC turn-off step.

e.) After the install is completely done, you can revert the settings to whatever they were before.

4.) Turning-off UAC is highly recommended before beginning the install and this needs a reboot to take effect

a.) For Windows Vista by going into Windows 'Control Panel | User Accounts | Turn User Account Control Settings On or Off' and uncheck the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer" check box

b.) For Windows 7 and Server 2008 by going into Windows 'Control Panel | User Accounts | Change User Account Control Settings'  and move the slider all the way down to "Never Notify" level

5.) Windows hides certain files and folders but for us to view and control those folders, use the following steps to unhide them:

a.) Open Windows explorer through any method (For Eg. Start | Open Windows Explorer)

b.) Under the 'Tools' menu (press the Alt key if you don’t see the menu bar on the top), click 'Folder Options'

c.) Go to the 'View' tab.

d.) Under the 'Hidden files and Folders' select the second radio button 'Show hidden files, folder, and drives'

e.) Also, scroll all the way down and make sure that 'Use Sharing Wizard' is un-checked

f.) Click Ok all the way through

6.) For Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 always install SQL Express 2008/2012 or later versions only.

7.) Also, prior to starting an install if you are unsure whether all Windows are up-to-date, check this by going into Windows Control Panel | Windows Updates and do 'Check for Updates' and make sure all important updates are installed at a minimum. We also recommend that all the 'Recommended' updates be installed as well.

8.) For 32-bit Operating systems :

a.) Default Program install location will be 'c:\Program Files\Captools Company'. You can change this as per users' requirements

b.) Default Data install location will be 'c:\ProgramData\CaptoolsNet'. You can change this as per users' requirements

9.) For 64-bit Operating systems :

a.) Default Program install location will be 'c:\Program Files (x86)\Captools Company'. You can change this as per users' requirements. Note the '(x86)'.

b.) Default Data install location will be 'c:\ProgramData\CaptoolsNet'. You can change this as per users' requirements

10.) For 64-bit Operating systems, the install is slightly different in that you have to do the Copy-and-paste things to install IIS. There is a possibility that even this method of installing IIS fails and you will know it when the black DOS command window (after copy-pasting) disappears really quick. In such a situation you have to follow the manual IIS 7 Installation steps from the help documentation.

General items:

1.) As a general rule, from now on, we now prefer to install on Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 operating systems. Windows Vista is also Ok but we would recommend upgrading it to Windows 7. We also prefer\recommend the 64-bit version of the operating systems for better performance and support for future database growth

2.) If you are moving over to a new (or different) machine then before un-installing make a backup of Captools/net on the old machine and move it (and prior significant backups) and your custodian data history to the new machine or to a portable drive.  Do not dispose of the old machine or hard drive (or re-format it) until you have successfully installed it on the new machine and have verified that all expected data is there on the new installation.  Following installation on the new machine you should un-install Captools/net from the old machine to prevent inadvertent use.

3.) After completing a new install on any operating system, *always* run a report and setup custodian imports to ensure that the install is completely functional.
